Kaleigh Fryer Case
A 16-year-old Guthrie girl convicted of murdering her father was sentenced Friday to life in prison with the possibility of parole.
A Logan County district judge sentenced Kaleigh Lynn Fryer after a jury convicted her of her father’s murder in May. Fryer pressured Jerome Chiles Jr., 22, her married boyfriend, into stabbing Lewis Keith Fryer to death at his home in May 2010. The pair tried to make it look like a botched burglary.
Chiles pleaded guilty and testified against Kaleigh Fryer in return for a sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole. A jury recommended the same sentence for Fryer, and a judge agreed with that recommendation at Friday’s formal sentencing.
Kaleigh Fryer’s defense attorney had sought to have her sentence reduced by District Judge Phillip Corley, but Corley cited evidence in the case that showed she masterminded the murder.
Kaleigh Fryer’s attorney, Eric Reynolds, could not be reached for comment Friday.
Chiles testified Kaleigh repeatedly asked him to kill her father, left the back door open for him and told him where in the house to find a knife, her father’s keys, a wallet and other items he was told to take
The couple’s plan fell apart under police questioning. Police noted in their reports that Kaleigh Fryer attempted to cry when first questioned but couldn’t produce any tears. Prosecutors said she showed no emotion Friday during sentencing.
“The only tears we’ve seen from her were when she was convicted,” Assistant District Attorney Lesley March said.
Lewis Fryer’s brother, Roy Fryer, said he was thankful to the jury and prosecutors for their work in the case and that the family was doing its best to cope with losing a loved one at the hands of a young relative.
March said family members told court officials they wanted Kaleigh Fryer to serve the entire life sentence.
“There was a sense of relief because they are afraid of her,” March said. “That may sound strange to be afraid of a 16-year-old, but they know what she’s capable of.”
