Caysen Allison Case
Caysen Allison was sentenced to 10 years in prison Tuesday for the deadly stabbing of Joe Ramirez, marking the conclusion of a high-profile case that has deeply impacted the Belton community.
The Ramirez side of the courtroom erupted in applause once Judge Wade Faulkner read the sentencing.
Emotional testimony and visible grief filled the courtroom Tuesday morning during the sentencing hearing for Allison, who was convicted last month in the fatal stabbing of Joe Ramirez.
Allison was convicted of criminally negligent homicide by a jury in April following the death of fellow student Joe Ramirez at Belton High School.
A judge later found that a deadly weapon was used or exhibited during the incident, which expanded the maximum sentence for Allison. He faced between two to 10 years in prison for Ramirez’s death.
The hearing began at 9 a.m. with familiar faces from both the Allison and Ramirez families in attendance, many visibly emotional. Allison, accompanied by his attorneys, entered the courtroom shortly after proceedings began.
Attorneys submitted a probation report and requested judicial notice of pre-sentencing investigation documents and trial exhibits. At the request of the defense, the court invoked the rule requiring all witnesses to be sworn in and sequestered until called to testify
Several members of Joe Ramirez’s family took the stand, offering emotional and heartbreaking testimony.
Amanda Rios, Joe’s mother, sobbing on the stand, gave an emotional statement. “Our life is not the same, nothing is the same anymore.” She added that Allison gets to “carry on and live a life…my son does not.” She additionally accused defense attorney Zachary Boyd of lying and tainting evidence.
Nikki Roberts, Joe’s aunt and the sister of Rios, was already crying when she began her statement. “Joe was the most kind and caring and loving kid I’ve ever known,” she said. “Our lives will never be the same.” She criticized the outcome of the trial and told the court, “I don’t think we’re getting justice in this case,” while asking for the maximum sentence.
Roberts also alleged that the defense had portrayed their family unfairly, and tensions in the courtroom prompted Judge Faulkner to remind the gallery not to react audibly during proceedings.
Alejandria Ramirez, Joe’s older sister, described learning of the stabbing while at work. She rushed to the hospital after being called by her mother’s best friend. “He was genuinely my best friend,” she said. “The hardest part is seeing my mom… I would be sleeping and wake up to her screaming.”
On the morning of May 3, 2022, a fight broke out between Allison and Ramirez in a bathroom at Belton High School.
After the stabbing happened, Allison — who was 18-years-old at the time — left the school, which led to the campus being placed on a precautionary lockdown.
Allison was later arrested off campus while Ramirez was taken to the hospital, where he would later die.
During the trial, a witness testified about the tense relationship between Allison and Ramirez, even stating that Ramirez pulled a gun on Allison following a prom after party.
Ramirez’s ex-girlfriend also stated that the fight was supposed to happen off campus and that Allison admitted to wanting Ramirez “on life support.”
