A 19-year-old Wichita man has been sentenced to five years and one month in connection with the shooting death of a 24-year-old man in 2025.
On Friday, Jaden Watts was sentenced to 61 months after pleading guilty in January to voluntary manslaughter.
The 19-year-old was originally charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Demarc Burgess. Under his plea deal, Watts’ charge was amended to one count of voluntary manslaughter.
According to officers at the scene of the shooting, which took place on March 22, 2025, Watts and Burgess had gotten into a fight which escalated into a shooting.
Burgess was taken to the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. He died at the hospital.
Watts was on the run for months before being arrested by the U.S. Marshals in June.

A man who pleaded guilty in a 2025 shooting death in Wichita has been sentenced to prison.
Jaden Watts was sentenced Friday in Sedgwick County District Court to 61 months in prison, or just over five years.
On March 22, 2025, Demarc Burgess was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds at a home near 143rd Street East and Kellogg Avenue. The 24-year-old died a short time later
Watts shot Burgess after an argument while they recorded rap music in the basement of the home, according to the affidavit.
The gun was found two days later, the affidavit says. Watts’ DNA was found on it after forensic examination.
Watts was arrested June and charged with second-degree murder. He pleaded guilty on Jan. 8 to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter.
