Kianna Opal Case
The woman convicted in a deadly stabbing on Mother’s Day last year in Omaha will serve decades in prison.
Kianna Opal, who pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and possession of a deadly weapon, was sentenced to 60 to 80 years in prison
Opal will be eligible for parole after 30 years.
She was originally charged with first-degree murder and use of a deadly weapon in the death of 17-year-old Ezra Sinkiawic.
The stabbing occurred near North 53rd and Spaulding streets in May 2024. Upon arrival, officers received updates indicating that a person had been stabbed.
Sinkiawic was transported to the University of Nebraska Medical Center by a private vehicle.
Omaha police said witnesses at the scene informed officers that the suspect, Opal, remained present. She was taken into custody without further incident.
Sinkiawic’s mother was in the courtroom on Tuesday.
“The other day for Mother’s Day there was two cardinals on my porch, and one just sat there. I said, ‘is that you, baby? Are you coming home? Oh, just come home. Just go home,’” Angela Cunningham said.
During a previous court appearance, prosecutors alleged Opal was acting erratically, threatening several people with a stun gun inside a home.
Prosecutors said the group left, but two people came back, including Sinkiawic.
They said Opal came upstairs, grabbed two knives, walked straight to the victim, making a stabbing motion and hitting her in the chest. Sinkiawic died at the hospital.
