Christopher Atkins Robert Robinson and Tahj Brewton Case
Three teen defendants have been sentenced this month after entering pleas related to a 2023 triple-murder case in Marion County, according to the State Attorney’s office.
The victims in what State Attorney Bill Gladson in the 5th judicial circuit called “execution-style” killings were Layla Silvernail, 16, Michael Hodo Jr., 17 and Camille Quarles, 16. He announced Wednesday all three suspects in the case had been sentenced after entering pleas earlier this year to avoid a trial.
Charged in the victims’ shooting deaths were Robert Robinson, 19, Tahj Brewton, 19 and Christopher Atkins, 15, who were 17, 16 and 12 years old, respectively, at the time of the crime.
Silvernail had been found lying near a dumpster on March 30, 2023 with a gunshot wound to her head, barely alive, in the area of Forest Lakes Park in Ocklawaha, which is a small community along State Road 40 east of Ocala.
She was transported to an area hospital, but later died of her injuries. Hodo Jr. was found dead one day later with a gunshot wound to his head lying beside the road in an area a few miles from where Silvernail was found. Quarles was found dead on April 1, 2023 having suffered a two gunshot wounds and found in the trunk of Silvernail’s partially submerged vehicle on the edge of a body of water about 6 miles south of where Hodo Jr. was found.
All three suspects were charged as adults.
“The premeditation, use of a firearm, and callous disposal of the bodies showed a level of intent indistinguishable from adults,” reads a press release from the State Attorney’s office.
Robinson and Brewton, who were each charged with three counts of first-degree murder were sentenced to life in prison. Atkins who was charged with one county of first-degree murder was sentenced to 40 years in prison. All three were also charged with all were also charged with armed robbery and evidence tampering.
Atkins was the first to plead in April, having agreed to testify against the two other defendants. Brewton pleaded guilty while Robinson pleaded no contest in June.
“Justice demanded nothing less than full accountability,” said Gladson in the release. “These convictions honor the stolen lives of Layla, Michael and Camille while affirming that no one — regardless of age — may brutally take the life of another without facing the gravest consequences.”
