A Kansas teen who pleaded guilty to murdering his pregnant girlfriend was sentenced to 74 years in prison.
Matthew Criscenzo, 19, fatally shot 20-year-old Naomi Oglesby in May 2025, while she was nine months pregnant with their child, the Wichita Police Department said at the time.
Oglesby died after being taken to the hospital. However, doctors successfully delivered her daughter, according to authorities.
The newborn had seizures and required intubation, suffering “severe” brain trauma due to a lack of oxygen, police said.
In January, Criscenzo pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and aggravated battery, according to court records reviewed by PEOPLE.
A judge sentenced Criscenzo to 74 years in prison on Tuesday, April 21, according to KAKE and KWCH.
A probable cause affidavit previously reviewed by PEOPLE stated that Criscenzo told police he “can’t believe I shot her” and that “I just didn’t want her to go and thought she was going to leave me.”
During Criscenzo’s sentencing hearing, Judge Jeff Goering declined to hand down a reduced sentence.
“Naomi was wanting to leave. Mr. Criscenzo didn’t want her to leave,” Goering said, per KAKE. “Had he just let her leave the house, we wouldn’t be here dealing with this tragedy today.”
KAKE further reported that Oglesby’s daughter Zy’nia suffered severe brain damage and struggles to eat and breathe.
“He not only took my sister’s life at the young age of 20, but he also permanently altered Zy’nia’s life,” said Oglesby’s sister Ashley Stewart, per KAKE. “Naomi’s daughter will never be able to have a normal childhood or adulthood if she miraculously makes it to adulthood.”
