David Ohlson Case

It’s been nearly two years since a then-teenager was sentenced to just over 10 years in prison for fatally shooting his own mother.

In 2023, David Ohlson pleaded no contest to manslaughter for killing his mom, Adrianna Ohlson, in 2022.

Here’s the history of Ohlson’s case.

Who is David Ohlson?
Ohlson, who is now 21 years old, was just 18 when he fired a shotgun at his mother on April 8, 2022.

According to psychologists who testified during his trial, Ohlson suffered from numerous mental illnesses like severe OCD, ADHD and an anxiety disorder. These issues prevented Ohlson from leading a normal life and caused him to struggle with “intrusive thoughts,” according to Dr. Stephen Zieman.

However, three weeks before he pulled the trigger, he told deputies his “life fell apart” when his mother and father separated after he claims his mom lost “empathy” for him.

What happened on on April 8, 2022?
Earlier that day, Ohlson was with his mother when they got into an argument, and he said his mom was “very cold” toward him.

He got angry and decided to retrieve a shotgun from a safe located in the house and put it in his car to kill a friend of his mother’s. However, Ohlson said he later couldn’t go through with it and brought the gun back in the house and pointed it at his mother.

As Ohlson’s father, Aaron, entered the home, the teen raised the shotgun, pointed it at his mother and fired a singe round into her abdomen.

“The father picked up the shotgun and secured it inside of his truck outside the home and returned and called 911,” the responding deputy wrote in his report. “The father stated that David Allan Ohlson has some psychological issues, but he stated he was unaware of exactly what the issues were.”

What happened at Ohlson’s trial?
The Office of the State charged Ohlson with second-degree murder, and the case was well on its way to trial when the teen signed a plea deal on May 17, 2023, pleading no contest to manslaughter rather than murder.

This plea knocked his sentence down to just over 10 years rather than possibly life in a state prison.

Ultimately, the case came down to Ohlson’s mental helath and whether it met the criteria for him to be declared legally insane.

In hearings leading up to Ohlson’s plea deal, Zieman testified he did not believe Ohlson met the definition of being declared not guilty by insanity despite saying he had “the most severe case of (OCD he’d) ever encountered.”

Circuit Judge John Simon agreed with the doctor and prosecutor Trey Myers’ argument that Ohlson’s mental health was not an excuse to kill his mother, leading to his prison sentence.

Where is David Ohlson now?
Ohlson is currently serving his sentence at Wakulla Correctional Institute Annex in Crawfordville, Florida.

According to the Florida Department of Corrections, he’s listed as being in minimum custody and has a release date of Feb. 12, 2032.
